A lot of readers have been flooding our tips line with different RVs that are out there in the wild. We’ve gotten bus conversion projects, fantastic vintage VW Bus campers, and what appears to be a hearse turned into a camper. Some of these campers have actually been pretty cheap, and it’s seemingly sent your favorite Autopian writers looking for inexpensive and cool RVs. We have a stack of these things, and let’s take a look at a few of our favorites....
Jowett was a British carmaker that was active between 1906 to 1954. Jowett was very fond of flat, horizontally-opposed engines, starting with flat twins and then around 1936 moving to flat-four engines, one of which the Jason had. It’s an appealing little car, this namesake of mine. I’m fond of flat-fours as it is, so I’m happy one of those is thumping away under that hood, behind that rakishly-raked radiator grille there....
I’d personally have jam-packed this motherlover full off goddamn apples. Plus, I’d have had a shot of the rear seatback up to show how many apples could be crammed into the luggage well/parcel shelf back there, as well as with the seat down, because potential buyers may want to know how many apples they could carry along with a full complement of five passengers. Really, the Corvair brochure is shamed, apple-cramming-wise, by what Eastern European apple orchardists (is that a word?...
It’s one thing to see a perfect, gleaming car on a museum floor, and quite another to see it all disassembled in the shop, and both have value. – JT] 1938 Tatra T-97 Jeff Lane returned from a 1,000-mile drive in the Hagerty California Mille vintage car rally a couple of weeks ago, and the T-97 performed flawlessly…almost. Jeff had to fix a torn fuel line along the way. After a roadside repair, it was good to go....
Yesterday was all about passing on the deep knowledge of the ancients. Opinions varied on the best way to do this, and which tool to use for it: Fairly even split, actually. I think it comes down to where you plan to teach the kid to drive. If you’re in a city, then a small car is probably the better choice. But if you’ve got the room to maneuver it, I still think a big dumb truck is the preferred implement....

But before you start working on a project, you need a good daily driver, so let’s see what you chose last week: It appears the old Volvo 240 has it by a nose over the California Focus. Not a bad choice at all, especially here in Portland, where the Volvo community and many specialty shops stand willing and able to help keep the machine on the road. Our first pair of projects is in honor of Don Juan de Torchinsky and his wonderful story on Friday about the VW Beetle engine sound (among other subjects)....
The pandemic-fueled rise of working from home has allowed so many Americans to live out their dreams of seeing the country. At today’s Industry Day at the 2023 Florida RV SuperShow I found no shortage of people who don’t just camp in their RVs, but work in them, too. One of the big issues with working out of an RV is how to stay connected to the internet. After all, you can’t hand something to your boss from a national park, and I couldn’t write this post without internet access....

This is a recommended setting as it can be used as a reminder. Yeah, I figured the title thing might scare some folks off the Mini. But I also notice that the seller has already knocked a grand off the asking price. For $1,900, for something tiny and speedy to mess around with, I think I’d go for the Mini, as much as I adore first-gen Neons. And now for something less fun, but more practical. Today we’re looking at two four-cylinder crossover SUVs, and since it has become something of a theme this week, both are banged up a bit....
I mean, probably not, but some advanced tetrisization will be required for that poor bastard in the lab coat to load up all those boxes of whatevers into that little Trabant wagon there. They couldn’t have let the guy use a van? No one had a real van around for him to chuck those things into? They’re really going to make him try and cram those 20-something boxes into every available cubic inch of space in the back of that Trabi?...
Here, look: See? That kinda works, doesn’t it? I’d pick up that book. Way back in the day and well before my time things were printed with multiple plates when you wanted something to be color. What this looks like to me is the car is printed in black and white while the woman is in color. So they have a black and white print of the image, and then a 3 color plate print of yellow/blue/red to colorize her....
But I wanted to use this image today because of the background, which feature some blurry lights that have a very particular “bokeh” look about them, where a background blurs into discrete, bold, often colorful shapes. The word is of Japanese origin, meaning, basically “blurry,” and was first applied to photography in the 1990s. That means this is a pre-bokeh example of bokeh! What a magical world we live in, right?...
The way the ad copy describes the transmission is clearly targeting the fleet buyer and not the driver, as it talks about “protecting your investment” and “reduced maintenance per ton-mile,” both of which are phrases so devoid of the idea of “fun” that the contrast with these day-glo transmissions is even better. I’m not sure why they’re shown at all, fun or not. The fleet owners aren’t going to look at them, probably ever, or at least they hope....
An average of 61.24 mph! That’s faster than one mile every minute! It handles like a dream, an unnamed “famous racing driver” said! Sound incredible? Can’t believe it? Well, another unnamed famous racing driver thinks it’s “Incredible. You couldn’t believe it.” That should settle that. Also, just for fun, look at what the Metropolitan concept car, called the Nash NXI, looked like: You can see a lot of styling cues, like those same-on-both-sides door skins and general proportions, but boy is the production front end an improvement....
Also, look at this charming-ass illustration: Can you take this much charm so early? Probably not. This is pretty intense charmium right there, with that late-Matisse torn-paper look. I love it. And look at the cover; someone isn’t afraid of color: Ugh. It’s all so good. thanks friends. Ever been there? If not you should go. It’s a beautiful country and while there were a few exceptions I found most of the people wonderful, certainly no more obnoxious on average than you’d find in America....
