With Android phones this value comes directly from rooting. You can improve your battery life, strengthen a phone’s performance and even flash a custom ROM. This allows you to change the operating system and include unique features that you might not be able to find from a phone that’s right off the shelf. Let’s take a look at how to Root HTC One to turn your device into something straight from the future.

Some Notes Before Starting

Not everyone is new to rooting, but it’s nice to have some reminders on how to keep your phone safe and protect yourself when rooting your phone. Make sure you always have all the latest drivers for your device before rooting, or the processes probably won’t work. You must always remember that if you do root your phone the manufacturer’s warranty is completely voided. This means that you can’t send in your phone in the future if something goes wrong and you want it fixed. This is a trade-off because you receive a wide range of new features by rooting, but you don’t have access to manufacture support. You also run the risk of bricking your phone if you don’t follow the instructions properly. This basically means that the phone is useless and you have to get a new one. Some final tips are to make sure your phone is charged at least 60 percent of the way. This makes sure the phone isn’t turned off during the rooting process. You should also backup all your important information. We have several tutorials on how to backup your information such as contacts, apps and calendars.

Method 1: The HTC One and Only

If you browse the Internet to find a rooting process for the HTC One, you’ll notice that many websites include procedures that don’t entirely work. The HTC One is considered a quite complex device in the realm of android phones, but the one process that allows you to root your phone successfully is actually relatively simple.

Step 1

To start off, navigate to the HTC development site to find the bootloader for your device. One of the reasons it’s so difficult for people to figure out how to root the HTC One is because it’s actually impossible unless you unlock the bootloader. HTC recognizes that people are using this to root their phones so they actually outline how to unlock the bootloader on this site. Follow their procedures for this particular step. It will be a waste to just repeat what they’re saying.

Step 2

After you unlock the bootloader you will have transferred quite a few files. Now you can simply download the TWRP recovery file, which is eventually used for your HTC One. Download the file, and transfer it into the same folder that you moved all the bootloader files into. It doesn’t really matter what you call this folder or where you place it. If you have AT&T then you’ll need to use this recovery file.

Step 3

Open a command prompt while you are viewing the folder in which you placed all of your files. You can do this by opening the start menu and typing in “cmd” and pressing enter. You can locate the folder by utilizing the cd command. For example, if you created a folder called android, then you would type in cd Desktop\android.

Step 4

Take your HTC One, and place it in fastboot mode. This can be completed by powering the device off and then holding down the power and volume down buttons simultaneously. You’ll notice a menu that pops up. Use the volume keys to navigate through this menu and select the fastboot option. Once this is complete you can connect the phone to your computer by using a USB cable.

Step 5

Return to the command page, and type in “fastboot flash recovery twrp.img” (without the quotes). This will flash the recovery file onto your phone. Once this process is complete you can turn off your phone and turn it back on again.

Step 6

Wait until your phone is completely turned on again. Download the superuser zip on your computer. Move it to your phone, and then reboot your phone so that it turns back on in recovery mode. You can then flash the zip file when the phone is in recovery mode.

Step 7

Turn off your phone, and proceed by turning it on in bootloader mode. Do this while you hold down the power and volume down buttons. Locate the recovery option, and press the power key in order to select it. This brings up the TWRP recovery on your phone. You’ll be given four options: Install, Wipe, Backup and Restore. Click on the Install button.

After you click on this button the phone will flash the zip file. Once the entire process is complete you can find the Reboot System button in order to completely restart your HTC One phone. Congratulations! You just successfully rooted your HTC One. Have fun changing up settings and using custom ROMS and root-only apps.

Method 2: Unlock for Free or for a Fee With a Service

There are plenty of services to unlock your phone, but some are a little questionable. Use this one to potentially get a free unlock or pay a fee to get the unlock code quicker.

Step 1

Go to Phone Unlockers.

Step 2

Select the Unlock? tab to start unlocking your phone.

Step 3

Fill in all of the information in the form that comes up. In order to find your IMEI number you can go to the dialer in your phone and type in *#06#.

Step 4

Select the Request Unlock key to proceed.

Step 5

The Stats area show you how long the unlock code will take to receive. They send you an email and then you can punch it into your phone after inserting a new SIM card.

Method 3: Give Your Carrier a Call

This method doesn’t always work, depending on the carrier, but it’s worth a shot because it’s free.

Step 1

Find your IMEI code and write it down. Find it by going to the dialer and typing in *#06#.

Step 2

Call your service provider and tell them you want to unlock your phone. They may ask you why or tell you it’s only possible if you are travelling.

Step 3

If they give you an unlock code then you can turn off your phone and pull out the SIM card. Place a new SIM card in there and then when a screen pops up you can type in the new unlock code. Congrats! Your phone is now unlocked.
