That’s why we’ve assembled the best games that don’t need the internet. These are all amazing games. For many of them, no internet means no ads as well. Sure, some games may not have all features available when playing offline, but they are still totally playable and completely enjoyable. Suffice to say, I have several of them on my smartphone to play when I’m traveling, especially outside the city. Note: the 10 best games that don’t need WiFi were tested on a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge smartphone. The games worked perfectly fine and there were no problems faced during the play testing.
1. Roll the Ball
Roll the Ball is a classical puzzle game that challenges you, but is also quite fun. The main objective of the game is to arrange the puzzle board so that the ball can roll to its destination. Along the way you can collect stars to improve your level rating. I really like the graphics of the game, the wooden blocks are a great touch. Like any other game, you get harder and harder puzzles as you progress. New elements like unmovable blocks are also introduced, so you are always challenged, but never board. 2. Angry Birds 2
Angry Birds 2 is one of the few games that actually change the gameplay mechanics and improve them over the first release. Even though I wasn’t a big fan of the first Angry Birds, the sequel had me hooked for at least an hour. Thankfully, one of the perks of being a tech writer is that I can call all that playtime work. The game relies on a simple concept: you catapult a bird and destroy any structure the pigs have built. There are a lot of different birds with special moves that you can get and experiment with. The levels are designed really nicely and the physics is the highlight of the game. You can earn up to three stars by achieving higher scores, which gives the game a lot of replayability. One point to be noted here is that the game does require an active Internet connection when you first boot it up to download some residual files, so if you are aiming to play this on a long trip, I recommend that you connect your phone to the internet before you go to fully activate the game. 3. Hungry Shark Evolution
Hungry Shark Evolution is a unique concept. In the game, you are a shark trying to eat up almost everything there is in the ocean. From small schools of fish to negligent humans, you can eat them all but there is one small problem. There are other bigger fish in the ocean and they may eat you as well. So you continue growing, collecting coins and gold until you can purchase a bigger shark. There is some random generation involved in creating the play area, so you won’t be seeing the same arrangement all the time. Some of the more dangerous areas are walled off until you get a bigger shark that can smash through them, preventing less experienced players from accidentally stumbling into frustrating death traps. Overall, Hungry Shark Evolution is a great game that allows you to feel accomplished without too many annoying in game deaths. Free Version
4. Earn to Die 2
Earn to Die 2 is a simple game about running over zombies. It’s not so simple that it’s boring, though. There are upgrades that you can earn, there is a great fuel mechanic, and the more you kill zombies the better you get. It is a side scrolling 2D game that puts emphasis on progression and reward. Within a few hours, your vehicle will be a very competent zombie killing machine. I only played it for around half an hour and I’m already fully engaged and invested. The only minor frustration is that you can only play the story mode to start, but once you complete the story the other modes open up for offline play. Free Version
5. Minecraft: Pocket Edition
Minecraft” Pocket Edition is the only paid app on this list, but it is a force to be reckoned within the gaming world and for good reason. You are likely familiar with the PC version and may be wondering what the differences are. Well, the mobile game is immensely accessible, easily enjoyable and doesn’t require a high strength PC. All of the features are available on the portable Android version of the game and better yet, it is accessible offline as well. Of course, if you want to play multiplayer you need an internet connection, but if you are going solo, this open world crafting game will keep you busy for many hours. Free Version
6. Alto’s Adventure
Your llamas have escaped and it is up to you to catch them all on the snowing mountains in Alto’s Adventure. So how do you do that? Just grab your snowboard and go after them, while avoiding obstacles and hurdles and doing insane stunts. You collect coins as you go, as well as llamas, so that you can purchase different upgrades and goodies from the shop. It is a great endless runner game for Android and has some of the best looking minimalistic 2-D graphics that we have seen in a while. Overall the game has a very relaxing aesthetic and doesn’t feel either hectic or dull, even if you play it for a long while. Free Version
7. 2048
2048 is perhaps one of the most relaxing puzzle games I’ve ever played. You have a 4 x 4 board that gets populated randomly by even numbers. All you need to do is move your fingers and add them to a grand total of 2048. That’s it, there are no special moves, funky power ups or a time constraint. This is what makes 2048 an intriguing game: the gameplay is simple without any learning curve, but the game is still challenging – much more so than you might expect. I’ve been a fan of this game for almost 2 years now and I’ve only achieve the grand 2048 number twice. However, the game is completely available offline and you’ll have an amazing time playing it. 8. Smash Hit
Smash Hit is a beautiful endless runner game that tasks you with flicking balls on glass pyramids. Each pyramid grants you 3 new balls that you can fling at not only the pyramids but also at obstacles to break them. The graphics are absolutely beautiful, the glass shattering animation is stellar and everything screams of quality in this game. I actually spent around 20 minutes playing the game, and initially it seems a little too easy, but I suspect that the later levels are more challenging. It is a fun little game that will keep you occupied for a long while, especially if you aim to challenge your friends. Free Version
9. Jetpack Joyride
Jetpack Joyride is a simple game that has one tap mechanics, but takes you back to the days of arcade machines. You are a gun toting joyrider who is hell-bent on destroying a lab. The gameplay is very simple; you tap on screen to elevate your mischievous protagonist and you release to fall back down. However, you’ll have to use lasers, rockets and a full array of different obstacles to avoid dying. Thankfully there are a number of different power ups available for you to utilize in your run, including the full on mechanical suit in the image above (one of my favorites). Overall the game has a lot of heart and is challenging right from the get-go. You’ll have a lot of fun playing it offline. Free Version
